Kenya: June 2018
10-14 DAYS EXPLORING AMBOSELI, OL PEJETA, SAMBURU AND MASAI MARA WITH A TSAVO EXTENSION.
OVERVIEW:
This is the Classic Kenyan Safari that includes all the big game reserves, as well as offering intimate experiences with orphaned elephants rescued by the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust.
DAY 1: EXPERIENCE NAIROBI
Arrive in Nairobi where you will be greeted at the airport and escorted to your hotel. If you choose to arrive in the morning or early afternoon, you will have the added option to experience Nairobi. Visit the David Sheldrick Elephant Orphanage, The Giraffe Centre, or the Karen Blixen Museum, and dine at the famed Carnivore Restaurant. Service is our specialty! We will be there every step of the way to help guide you, and we'll set everything up according to your preferences so you can relax and enjoy your adventure!
DAY 2: TRAVEL TO AMBOSELI
After breakfast, depart to Amboseli National Park. Located southeast of Nairobi, Amboseli is an area of low, "scrubby" vegetation and open grassy plains, all of which makes for easy game viewing. It's best known for its large herds of elephants and stunning views of Mt. Kilimanjaro, Africa's tallest mountain. During game drives, you are guaranteed to see elephants, but you may also see lions, hippos, zebras, wildebeest, gazelle, buffalo, leopart, spotted hyena, giraffe, cheetah, and over 300 kinds of birds. Arrive at your lodge in time for lunch followed by an afternoon game drive.
DAY 3: AMBOSELI NATIONAL PARK
Full day of game viewing in Amboseli.
DAY 4: TRAVEL TO SWEETWATERS / OL PEJETA CONSERVANCY
After breakfast, board your flight to Nanyuki. Upon landing, you will be greeted at the airstrip and taken to Ol Pejeta Conservancy, located on the plains of Mount Kenya, where seeing rhinos is guaranteed. Host to the "Big Five" (elephant, rhino, lion, buffalo, and leopard) and the largest black rhino sanctuary in East Africa, Ol Pejeta is also home to the last three Northern White Rhino on Earth, protected under 24-hour armed guard. It also hosts Kenya's only chimpanzee sanctuary (formed by Jane Goodall), and shelters large numbers of rare and endangered species.
DAY 5: TRAVEL TO SAMBURU
After breakfast, depart to Samburu National Reserve, a park famous for its rugged beauty, rich wildlife and semi-nomadic Samburu tribesmen. In addition to a plethora of big cats, Samburu offers a "Special 5" unique to the area: the long-necked gerenuk, Grevvy's zebra, the reticulated giraffe, Beisa Oryx and the Somali ostrich.
DAY 6: SAMBURU NATIONAL RESERVE
Full day of game viewing in Samburu.
DAY 7: TRAVEL TO MASAI MARA
Depart after breakfast and board your flight for the unparalleled beauty of Masai Mara where you will enjoy an afternoon game drive. Famed for its large population of black-maned Masai lions, African leopards and Tanzanian cheetahs, as well as the Great Migration, Nature's grand spectacle of zebra and wildebeest journeying to and from the Serengeti in search of fresh grasses every year from July to October.
DAYS 8-9: MASAI MARA NATIONAL RESERVE
Spend full days exploring the rolling hills and plains of the Mara for a chance to spot lions, elephants, leopards, cheetahs, and—if you're lucky—a black rhino. Those traveling in July and August can expect to experience The Great Migration. Enjoy extras like a Hot Air Balloon Ride over the plains, a Sundowner, or an Evening Game Drive. We strive to fulfill your every desire to make this the trip of your lifetime!
DAY 10: RETURN TO NAIROBI:
Travel back to Nairobi where you can choose to travel home, or stay on to enjoy our extension to interact with the elephants at David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust.
TSAVO EXTENSION:
This extension offers the chance to see Tsavo, Kenya's most remote park. The highlight is an intimate, interactive, 2-day experience with the orphaned elephants rescued by David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust as they transition back into the wild. Often ex-orphans who are now totally wild also visit their human family at Ithumba, and it's quite a moving experience to witness the bond these gentle giants have with their keepers, and to come close to and touch a wild elephant. This is guaranteed to be the experience of a lifetime for anyone who loves animals, but for elephant lovers especially.
DAY 1: TRAVEL TO WEST TSAVO
Tsavo National Park as a whole consists of 10 million acres of pure wilderness, incorporating savannah, mountain ranges and hils, acacia forests, and an extensive river system. It's a remote park, and ideal for those who enjoy solitude and a chance to explore the wilderness without encountering others. Along with elephants, you may encounter lions, leopards, rhinos, buffalo, and hippos at Mzima Springs.
DAY 2: TRAVEL TO EAST TSAVO / ITHUMBA
After an early breakfast at your lodge, check out and enjoy a morning game drive through West Tsavo to Ithumba. Along the way, you'll hope to encounter Tsavo's famous "red elephants" along with big cats and -- if you are very lucky -- wild dogs. There will be a picnic lunch along the way, and you will arrive at Ithumba in time to see the elephant's have their afternoon feeding and go back to their stockades for the night. Often, large herds of wild elephants return to Ithumba to greet their human family It's time to "unplug" - there's no WIFI here! After a delicious dinner (the chef at Sheldrick prepares the most fabulous food!), enjoy the peace and quiet of Ithumba and a good night's sleep.
DAY 3: EAST TSAVO / ITHUMBA
The day at Ithumba is very structured. Arise at 5:30am to witness the elephants' 6am feeding. Return to camp at 8am to shower and enjoy breakfast. If the Kenyan Wildlife Service deems it safe, there is time for a short, guided nature walk until 11am when the elephants have their mudbath. Interacting with the orphans as they play in the water and take their "mud bath" will be in experience you'll remember always. Lunch is served from 1-2 pm. From 2-4:30, you may enjoy a game drive around Ithumba, or rest at the camp. At 5pm, watch the elephants get their bedtime milk, play, and go back to their stockades for the night. Then enjoy another fantastic dinner and bed.
DAY 4: TRAVEL BACK TO NAIROBI
Arise at 5:30am to watch the elephant's 6am feeding. This will be your last encounter with the elephants; checkout is after breakfast at 9:00am. Then you will depart for Nairobi.
